Facebook: Going too far?
This article is extremely relevant to virtually all college students, as the popularity of Facebook is sky-rocketing. The idea that universities can peruse through the profiles of their students and then document them for policy violations is very controversial. I myself have had experiences with this. When I applied to be an RA (resident advisor) this year, I was warned by people already working in Residence Life to remove any pictures of me doing "inappropriate" or illegal activities, such as under-age drinking. The people selecting the RAs apparently look through Facebook profiles. Also, our university recently implemented a new system at the front desk of every dorm. It includes a swipe system, which means that the students have to swipe their IDs every time they enter a dorm. This seemed cumbersome and annoying at first, and allegedly a desk worker joined a Facebook group called "I Hate the New Swipe System" or something similar to that. Apparently once the superiors of Residence Life learned about this, the desk worker lost his/her job. Whether or not this is true, I cannot say. But the idea that joining a Facebook group that could just be a joke among friends could cost someone his/her job is disturbing to me.
Having said that, I also agree with the law professor from the article. As students, we have the capability of limiting who can see our Facebook profile. By not choosing to limit its accessibility, we are waiving our right to privacy. I think that we as students need to take a more active and responsible approach to what we post on the web. Whether we like it or not, we can be and are judged by these things. I personally think that Facebook is just a fun way to network with people and a place to be funny. I know that I include random facts (true and untrue) and other things just because they are funny. While I personally do no support using Facebook as an RA to find policy violations or in the work place to virtually stalk potential employees, I realize that some people and organizations do do this. Therefore, I will exercise more caution concerning my Facebook account.
